Republican Town Board Facing Backlash Over Decision.
At the end of May, the town of Milton in Saratoga County passed a resolution limiting the flags flown on town property to official government and military flags.
This has drawn pushback and alarm from Saratoga County LGBT advocates and residents who say this is an attack on expressions of LGBT identities.
Recall that former Town Supervisor, Benny Zlotnick erected the Pride flag at town hall last year for the first time. The move was met with blowback from some residents in town.
According to the resolution, the only flags allowed to be flown on town property are the American flag, New York State flag, US military flags, and New York Coast Guard and National Guard flags. Notably, this was passed at the beginning of June, traditionally “Pride Month” for the LGBT community, which includes the display of assorted pride flags.
This has had the effect of making some LGBT residents feel unwelcome in Milton, as they feel that the town is purposefully trying to silence them.
The resolution does not censor gay or transgender pride flags specifically, but advocates say that the timing can’t be a coincidence, and that a blanket ban on all non-governmental, non-military flags affects everyone.
